Commodore's Comments for July

June is coming to an end and our sailing season is well under way for 2008. Last weekend I noticed a lot of confusion at our Babylon Pond and I want to bring everyone up to date on our Club Policy. Several skippers arrived at the Lake with different boats than our race schedule called for. Saturday was a Soling day. We ask skipper’s with different boats to keep clear of the boats that are racing. This is only fair because no one wants to be fouled by a non-racing boat. At many of the buoys non-racing boats were trying to get around with the boats racing, this should not be. Our club has had an open policy, but non-racing skippers should stay clear of racing boats. In the future I hope this policy will be followed, there will be no separate starts for other boats.

I know that the LSMSC runs some crazy racecourses, especially at Lake Ronkonkoma. Usually our course is not a triangle shape, but a modified figure 8. This is because we are trying to have a beat to at least one mark. Usually this alteration in the course results in several boats changing places. We don’t want to play follow the leader (1st boat around the first mark wins and so forth). This is one reason that we are trying to make the course longer, it gives more boats a chance to catch the boat in front of them or lose their position to another boat. We may not get in a lot of races, but the competition at all levels is enhanced by giving everyone a chance to catch someone.

If people don’t agree with what I’ve said above, please e-mail your response to me or see me at the pond. If you have a better idea, lets try it, just let me know.

July 19, our club will be having the Rulon Cup race in 36’s this year. This event is only for club members. The trophy is beautiful and is a perpetual trophy and must be returned the following year. Only the winner receives the trophy, so second place or lower is no good. This race is also scored as a regular club 36 race.

There will be no summer meetings for the club so everyone enjoy the summer and remember the best local activity is at the pond for a few hours each week.

Posted on the website are our YTD results for the various classes that we sail. Remember, to be counted in a class race you have to compete in at least half the races. We never know how many races we will be completed until the end of the year. The best way to be counted is to arrive at the Lake on a regular basis.

PS. I purchased a Victoria and started to build it, but I’m putting it up for sail. The price is $150.00, that includes the kit, servos (2 - Futaba), and carbon fiber rods for mast and boom. Email me if interested.
