Commodore's Comments for September

It’s hard to believe that summer is coming to an end
as we enter the month of September. After relaxing
around home for the month of July I took off and
headed to Maine for a course at the Wooden Boat
School. This was an intense course on building a
plank on frame vintage Marblehead. The course was 1
week and it was tuff. While class started at 8:00 am
and ended at 5:00 pm I was usually in class about
6:45 am and left class around 8:30 pm. The only time
I wasn’t working was for lunch and dinner.
After the first week Chris told me to stay a second week and continue working on the boat, which I did in the Wooden Boat Finishing class, part 2. The second week was a little bit easier; I would start work about 6:45 am and finish around 5:30 pm. In the evening I would relax with my feet up and usually fall asleep watching TV. While some people’s joinery was better than mine, I’m happy with what I produced for the 1st wooden boat I’ve ever built. You will probably see this boat on the water next year. I plan on finishing it sometime over the winter.
With the skills that I learned at the school I plan on trying to design a boat (either a 36” or 50” inch model) and then building the boat and sailing it at the Lake. I may lose many races, but I’ll enjoy the building process and seeing the creation out on the water.
So much for what I’ve been doing the last few weeks. Racing has continued at Lake Ronkonkoma with an earlier start time to avoid the people swimming through our course. Now that the weather is getting cooler we are going back to starting our races at 10:00 am. This will begin August 30, and continue for the remainder of the year. Fall is a great time to sail, usually with good winds and great company.
Now that fall is upon us, we will start having our monthly meetings again. Our next meeting will be the second Wednesday of the month, September 10, at the Whitehead’s. The meeting will start at 8:00 pm. This is a time to get together in a more relaxed atmosphere then by the Lake to discuss rules and infractions, up coming boat modifications and winter building projects. I will discuss some of the things that I learned while up in Maine (how to make bumpers, lead ballast, a different way to make radio boards, etc.).
Eisenhower Park MYC will be having an Invitational for Soling 1 Meters on September 27. If you need a registration sheet please see me.
Hope everyone has enjoyed the summer.

PS. I have a vintage Marblehead for sail (Mad Cap design) with nice overhangs fore and aft. The boat has a wood deck and comes complete with sails and servos. Just add a radio and receiver and your ready to go. Price $500.00 Email me at commodore@lakesidemsc.org.
