Commodore's Comments for March

March has arrived and with it the promise of warmer
weather and a change in seasons, from winter to
spring. At least that’s what is suppose to happen.
Instead, we have freezing temperatures and the
biggest blizzard in years!!
Usually I start my March newsletter by saying sailing is about to begin. Well, believe it or not, SAILING IS ABOUT TO BEGIN for the 2009 season. For starters, the Heckscher MYC is having the first Invitational of the year on March 21st for Marbleheads, so if you haven’t signed up yet, you should, because this cold weather isn’t going to last forever.
Our season starts March 28th with practice racing at Lake Ronkonkoma. Actual scoring races start the first Saturday of April (April 4th) and continue throughout the season. See the racing schedule for season activities during 2009.
Our next club meeting will be the 2nd Wednesday of March (March 11) at the Whiteheads’ at 8:00 pm. I would like to discuss yacht finishing (painting, varnishing, etc.). I’m quite sure there are as many ways to finish a yacht as we have members in the club. I would like to hear about different techniques, do you spray or apply paint with a brush. Has anyone applied varnish from a spray can? I think a discussion on this topic could be enlightening because we all do things differently. Also, bring any other topics that you would like to talk about.
Sailing begins in 2 ½ weeks. ARE YOU READY?
