Commodore's Comments for August

July has been a hot and humid month with light winds.
Because of the oppressive heat and humidity several
members asked for a survey to be sent to all members
about an earlier start time (9:00 am) for the summer
months. This was sent out last weekend to all members
with a due date of Wednesday, July 30, 2008. Six
members voted to start at 9:00 and three members
voted for 10:00. We will try the new start time of
9:00 am on Saturdays for the month of August. This
earlier start time should miss some of the crowds
that come to the Lake around 11:00 am.
The first survey showed that a majority of members preferred sailing at Lake Ronkonkoma on Saturday for all the boats we sail (36’s, 50’s, and Solings). A revised race schedule was issued showing the results of that survey. This in no way conflicts with the Wednesday activities that are currently going on at our Babylon location.
We are now half way through the sailing season. The turnouts have been good and the racing activities have been tense at times. The modified figure “8” course that we use has given us a windward leg that often results in skippers gaining or losing positions. The twice around the course keeps the competition keen because no skipper is guaranteed a win until he/she crosses the finish line.
The remainder of the season should be interesting. Usually July and August are light winds, but once the humidity disappears the winds should be better and our racing should be good.
You will find the YTD results for the various classes that we sail here. Many skippers are very close this year and the results could change right up to the last race.
I’m going to be out of town for two weeks in August. I’ll miss sailing August 9 – 23. Hopefully, the winds will be good for the skippers that come down to the Lake for a few hours of fun and relaxation.
