Commodore's Comments for October

Where has the summer gone!! Fall is already here and in a few days October will be here also. Our sailing has been good both at Lake Ronkonkoma and at Babylon on Wednesday’s. There are only a few more weeks before our season ends. Remember, play first, you can always work later (I think my father use to tell me the opposite). Winter will be around the corner and this will be the time for any needed repairs or changes that you’ve been thinking of doing on your boat. Last year I built my 36 and completely re-built the 50’s deck. It’s always warm in the workshop!

Last weekend, September 20, we held the Rulon Cup race for club members only. This was an enjoyable day with calm seas, moderate winds, and enjoyable company. Six skippers were present and at the starting line for the first race. None of the skippers present had ever won this event before, so everyone was out to do their best. At the end of the day it was my turn to have my name inscribed on the trophy for 2008. It took many years to finally win this event and the trophy will be hung at home in a prominent place until next year’s event is held.

Last month I spoke about my activities at the Wooden Boat School last August. I thought this boat would be next winter’s project but I’ve found some extra time on my hands and have been working a little bit every day. With luck this boat will be launched before our season ends and hopefully sailed in one or two Marblehead races. Stay tuned!

Our next club meeting will be the second Wednesday of October (10/8) at the Whiteheads’. We will meet at 8:00 pm. Some topics that will be discussed will be our awards luncheon, what to charge for the luncheon, next year’s dues, and a possible reduction in our yearly dues, racing rules and tactics, and building projects.
Hope to see everyone at the Lake for the last few weekends of our sailing season.

PS. I have a vintage Marblehead for sail (Mad Cap design) with nice overhangs fore and aft. The boat has a wood deck and comes complete with sails and servos. Just add a radio and receiver and your ready to go. Price $500.00 Email me at commodore@lakesidemsc.org.

Rich Sikorsky has Fiberglass molds that are being stored in his shop. He wanted to ask if anyone in the club would want them, if not they will be discarded. Email Rich at jocko97@gmail.com
