Commodore's Comments for November

We’ve had a very mild October and some great sailing weather. If you haven’t been to Lake Ronkonkoma lately you’ve been missing a lot of fun. House work will always be there, but the sailing season is coming to an end in two more weeks.

On October 9, 2008 I launched my new vintage Marblehead at Eisenhower Park for its first sail. The boat handled well and I was pleased with her performance. I had always wanted to build a wooden boat and was always reluctant to try. Last summer I took the first step, going to the WoodenBoat School and building a “Peony” vintage design. I sailed against our Marblehead fleet on October 18, 2008 and while we only had four boats on the Lake, I took a third for the day. After the first four races I had 3 first place finishes and a second place finish, then my mainsheet broke and I was done for the day. That day had strong winds causing many skippers to have trouble coming about. I intend to also sail this boat on November 8th, our last sailing date. The boat's name is “Kaitlyn”, named after my first granddaughter.

At our last meeting we discussed our club finances, our annual awards luncheon, and next year’s dues. With the economy going crazy, we have decided to reduce the cost of the luncheon to $10.00 each for club member and their spouse. If you have a family membership the cost would be $10.00 each for three people. The awards luncheon will be held on December 6, 2008, at the South Shore Restaurant at the corner of Route 112 and Sunrise Highway, Patchogue, NY. The cost for non-members will be the same as last year, $30.00 per person. We would appreciate an RSVP by December 1st, 2008. All RSVP’s should be sent to the Treasurer, Rich Nicewicz at the address on the flyer. You can download a copy of the flyer here.

Dues for next year will remain the same, $25.00 for a full membership, $30.00 for a family membership. Associate memberships no longer exist. You can download a copy of the membership renewal form here.

Frostbite season will start on the Saturday after our Summer season ends (11/15). The boat will be the 36 model and the place will be at the Town of Babylon pond. The series will be two six week periods. The awards luncheon will cancel sailing activities on December 6th. Victorias will continue to be sailed throughout the winter on Wednesdays at the same pond. Only hard water will stop our sailing activity during the cooler months.

Our next club meeting will be on November 12th, at the Whitehead’s. The meeting will start at 8:00 pm and we will discuss the election of officer’s for next year. Other topics that will be discussed are the awards luncheon, frostbite sailing, etc. Come and enjoy the last meeting of 2008. As usual we will not have a meeting during the month of December.
