Commodore's Comments for December

The LakeSide MSC has just finished its last official
activity for 2008, the awards luncheon. This occasion
was well attended by our membership with 18 members
and guests attending. As usual the food was good, and
the company was great.
While this might be the banquet at the end of the year, there are many members who refuse to admit that the season is over. These members are sailing Victoria’s every Wednesday (practice) and 36’s every Saturday (6-week frostbite series) at the Town of Babylon pond on Sunrise Highway. In fact they are in the middle of their first frostbite series.
On the other hand there are the wimps, like me, who like to be warm during the cooler months and head for the boat shop to repair and building for next year. I personally have several projects underway. A new vintage Marblehead is being built and hopefully a vintage 36 will also be built. They may be in the water next season, but that depends on how much time I can spend down stairs.
While I may be building, winter is still the best time to make those repairs that were needed last year. If you need new batteries, now is the time to buy them. If your sheets are frayed, now is the time to replace them. This may be December and we have the winter ahead of us, but time will pass quickly. Let’s try to limit breakdowns during the warmer season.
At our last meeting we briefly discussed our sailing plans for 2009. Next year we will start the season with the first official race on the first Saturday in April. The season will end the last Saturday of October and the awards luncheon will be moved up to the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The Frostbite season will start the beginning of November for those members that are not affected by the coooold.
During December we will not have a club meeting. The next meeting will be the second Wednesday of January 2009 (January 14th) at the Whitehead’s. As usual we will start at 8:00 pm. These winter meetings give club members a chance to get together and see projects that are being worked on. Paul will also give us some ideas on sail building.
Tom and I hope everyone will have a joyous and prosperous Holiday Season.
