Commodore's Comments for January

Happy New Year everyone! Hopefully everyone had a good holiday season with friends and family and hopefully everyone didn’t eat too much like me.

Our frostbite season was doing very well until about a week or two ago when the water became hard, making sailing difficult. Hopefully the weather will warm up so that the hardy members of our club, who forget that winter is here, can keep sailing. I, for one, like to keep warm.

I have been enjoying staying home instead of braving the cold. Currently I’m in the process of building another boat. The one under construction now is a vintage Marblehead, similar to my other vintage boat. These are being named after my grandchildren and there’s another one on the way, due the end of May. I’m told that this one will be a boy, and being the instigator that I am, I hope to get a little brother-sister rivalry started. The parents may not like it, but it may be fun. Guess I’ve been driving the buses too long.

Basically this boat is being built to make sure that what I learned last summer isn’t forgotten. I also hope to start another boat in the not too distant future. The next boat will be a 36, but first I have to design it. Only time will tell what happens.

Sailing during the winter may be fun, but don’t forget about summer. It’s not too far away and your boats should be ready at the start of the season. Now is the time to buy new batteries, replace sheets, and make general repairs to your boat. Last year I replaced my Viper deck and it was a fun winter project.

Our next club meeting will be Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 8:00 pm at the Whiteheads’. We will start planning the 2009 season with the race schedule that will include various invitationals as they become known. We will discuss any rules that people want clarified or infractions that have occurred on the pond during the frostbite season. Bring your building projects and get some ideas before making costly mistakes. Most of all relax and enjoy the company of fellow pond yacht skippers that you don’t always have time to talk to at lakeside.

I hate to bring this up, but if you are delinquent with your dues (due by 12/31/08) you are in jeopardy of losing your frequency and this will be your last newsletter. Dues are payable to Rich Nicewicz and should be sent to his address.
