Commodore's Comments for February

January has been cold, an average of 5 degrees below
our normal weather. The ponds have hardened and
sailing, as we know it, has halted for a few weeks.
We can look at this as an opportunity to prepare for
another season, to repair our yachts and make
improvements that we didn’t have time for last
season. February may just be starting and may bring
more cold and harsh weather, but March with the
promise of warmer temperatures is only four weeks
away.
I’ve been busy building another Marblehead yacht (following the vintage rules). This will make two boats that I’ve built and I intend to make at least two more boats in the near future. These boats will hopefully be passed down to my children and grandchildren. They may never sail them. They may put them in an attic or basement and never use them, but maybe, just maybe, they may sail them at some future time and remember all the fun I had building them.
I also have a design on the drafting board for a 36” model that will be built amongst all the other activities. Someday I hope to start this boat and hopefully launch it before the end of 2009. Time will tell. Chris says I’m building a vintage fleet and maybe she’s right. Either way I’m meeting a lot of interesting people all over the United States.
Our membership roster is complete and most members have renewed their membership. The roster is attached to this e-mail and should be used to contact members about club activities or to sail with friends.
Also included with this month’s membership e-mail is our frequency list. Please check this and let me know if any changes are required. The club expects you to sail on your assigned frequency. This way we can all come down to the Lake and sail without any conflicts or problems.
Our proposed sailing schedule is also included in this month’s e-mail. Please review this and come to the meeting with any changes that you think should be made. We will finalized this at the meeting and publish it in the next newsletter.
Our next meeting will be at the Whitehead’s on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at 8:00 pm. At our last meeting Paul and Rich gave a great presentation on sail making. At this meeting I would like to discuss various ways of casting lead ballast. I need some ideas for a future project, so please help. I would like to finalize all the attachments with this newsletter and enjoy a carefree summer. Bring any projects that you are working on, I’m quite sure people will be interested in seeing up close what will be sailing on the pond next year.
