Commodore's Comments for February

On Thursday the weathermen announced that spring would be in 30 days. That’s a little over 4 weeks before our sailing season begins. Hopefully, our members are planning on coming down to the Lake for our practice sail at the end of March. Full racing begins the first weekend of April. We will be sailing on the SOUTH SIDE of the Lake at the Brookhaven beach. Racing will start at 10:00 am. Click here for the 2010 race schedule. You can also see me at the Lake for a copy.

On Saturday, February 13th, we had a club meeting at the north side of Lake Ronkonkoma (our old sailing spot). We had heard rumors that the water level was dropping and this was a good time to see for ourselves. While the water level is down from last year, it’s doubtful that the level will be low enough for us to bring our cars down to the water like we use to. Maybe as the season progresses the water level will go down. I intend to petition the county to use this area on Saturday mornings. Last year this request was approved, but the water level was still too high. Hopefully the water will drop a little bit more and our petition will be approved in 2010. Stay tuned.

As February comes to an end, there are only a few weeks till our sailing begins. I hope everyone is as anxious for summer to come as I am. Snow is fun, but enough is enough. It will feel good to feel some warmth in the air with the breeze on our backs and our yachts competing on the water. Speaking of competition, the Hecksher MYC is hosting the 1st event of the year, The Bill Leidel Memorial. This event is being held March 20th at Hecksher Pond and is a great event to start off the new year. Several of our members will be there and win or lose; it’s a great day on the water.

I checked my battery packs and found 2 to be a little low. While still usable, I decided to order 2 more packs. There is nothing worse than going to the Lake and finding that you have no juice to enjoy the day.
